MMP Training Programs

Essential Problem Solving Skills ("EPSS") Our first phase of EPSS workshops were held in Moss Point, Mississippi from February 26 - 28, and in Gulfport on May 2 and 3, 2007.  At least 3 additional EPSS workshops are currently planned through December 2008.

As publicized in the Sun Herald in June, 2006 and reported in the Mississippi Press on March 1, 2007, the focus of this training will be to train residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast region in conflict resolution skills, in order to enhance the capacities of residents and their communities to work collaboratively and productively in long term recovery efforts. In addition, we intend to create a team of community mediators able to respond to community and organizational conflicts arising during the long term recovery efforts and beyond.

The EPSS training workshop is designed as a “stand-alone” interactive skills training which will enhance the capacity of each individual trainee to be an effective problem solver with regard to conflicts in his/her personal life, employment relationships and community interactions.

Each Interactive workshop will include appropriate role plays and essential skills, including:

  • Effective Communication

  • Positive Problem Solving, including Bias and Cultural Sensitivity

  • Civic and Interpersonal Engagement

  • Personal and Collective Accountability

  • Negotiation, Advocacy and Collaboration

Successful completion of the EPSS workshop will qualify trainees to apply for our two advanced training programs, Community Mediation and Conflict Resolution and Become an EPSS Trainer.  Our first advanced training in Community Mediation and Conflict Resolution was held in Gulfport from June 26- 28, 2007.  Begining in late September, 2007, concurrent with our next EPSS workshop, some of our alumni will go even further, through our intensive Trainer Training to Become an EPSS Trainer.  Those successfully completing either of these advanced trainings become candidates to work with MMP in the provision of services to their communities, with other organizations and on their own.  Additional advanced trainings are planned for December, 2007, as well as June and December, 2008.
