Community Mediation and Conflict Resolution Training

Mediation is a process by which all persons involved in a dispute are joined by an independent and neutral third party who discusses the issues in dispute with them and assists them in arriving at a mutually agreeable outcome which will resolve their conflict.

The MMP Mediation Training workshop will train a select group of community members who have demonstrated competence in the use of techniques learned in the Essential Problem Solving Skills training and are interested in becoming MMP mediators within their communities.

As a Community Mediator you may be called upon by the MMP or members of your community to act as a neutral in assisting persons in conflict resolve their disputes.  Examples of disputes which you may be called upon to mediate include, but may not be limited to: neighbor/neighbor, landlord/tenant, consumer/merchant, community planning, etc...  These are not legal disputes, but interpersonal conflicts.

Under the expert leadership and training of Melvin A. Rubin, who joined us from Coral Gables, FL, our first MMP Mediation Training workshop was held in Gulfport on June 26 - 28, 2007 with a group of selected participants.  These participants are now prepared to begin the coaching phase of MMP Mediation Training by providing mediation services in their communities under the guidance of trained and experienced Mediators.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of MMP EPSS training, or

  • completion of any MMP approved conflict resolution training program and facilitation of an MMP EPSS training workshop.

The cost of this workshop will be $550 per person.  Scholarships will be available, for all or part of this fee, for any qualified applicant with financial need who cannot arrange to have this fee underwritten by a community organization or an employer.

The next Mediation Skills workshop is scheduled for  December 12-14, 2007 (Biloxi, MS), with others planned for May or June, 2008 and December, 2008, with the possibility of adding other dates as well.  Specific dates and locations will be announced as soon as they are scheduled.
